roll yaw pitch body

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

The board is kicked up and trapped against the back of the standing leg - deck hugging the calf, wheels facing out - held there by the hooking foot's ankle while the rider balances on one leg, then released back to the ground to be ridden away. Getting in, the rider scoops the board up their leg and closes the ankle around it; the hold is friction and geometry, not grip. Popularized as a modern flow element by skaters like Kilian Martin and Andy Anderson, it works as a pause, a pivot point, or a dismount into other one-footed tricks.

Step by step

  1. Rolling slowly, step one foot to the ground or shift weight fully onto one leg on the deck.
  2. Scoop the board up the back of the standing leg with the other foot's instep.
  3. Close the hooking ankle so the deck presses flat against the calf, wheels outward.
  4. Balance on the standing leg with the board wrapped, holding or pivoting for effect.
  5. Open the ankle and swing the board down and forward to the ground.
  6. Step on as it lands wheels-down and roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footTypically the standing foot: carries all weight on the ground or deck while the board is wrapped.
Back footThe hooking foot: scoops the deck up the calf, clamps it with the ankle, and times the release.
ShouldersCounter the asymmetric load by opening slightly away from the wrapped side.
ArmsOut for one-legged balance; the near arm sometimes steadies the deck at the top of the wrap.
GazeForward during the hold for balance, dropping to the landing spot at release.
