How it works

The first rail trick most skaters learn: approaching with the rail in front of the toes, the rider ollies the front truck over so the middle of the deck lands perpendicular on the rail and slides on the wood between the trucks. The rider straddles the bar facing the direction of travel - the open, sighted position - with weight centered directly over the contact patch; leaning up-rail stalls the slide and leaning down-rail slips the board out. Deck-on-rail friction is high on rough surfaces, which is why round steel rails and waxed edges are its home. Exit is a 90-degree turn-out to regular or fakie as the end of the rail passes under the front foot.

Step by step

  1. Approach the rail at a slight angle with it on your toe side, moderate speed.
  2. Ollie high enough for the front truck to clear the bar, turning the board 90 degrees so the deck's center lands on it.
  3. Keep shoulders open facing down the rail; hips centered so weight drops straight through the deck-rail contact.
  4. Slide balanced on the middle of the deck, knees bent, feet directly over both bolts.
  5. As the end approaches, begin turning your shoulders toward your landing direction.
  6. Steer the nose 90 degrees out (to regular or fakie), drop the wheels to the ground, and roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footOver the front bolts; lifts the truck over the rail on entry and leads the turn-out on exit.
Back footOver the back bolts, weighting the deck evenly onto the rail.
ShouldersStay open, chest facing down the rail the whole slide - they pre-rotate the exit.
ArmsHeld wide over each end of the board, trimming up-rail/down-rail lean.
GazeAt the lock-in point, then fixed on the end of the rail.
