roll yaw pitch body

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

The rider rolls off a set of stairs in a tail-heavy manual so the tail smacks the lip of each successive step, producing the rapid-fire popping sound that names the trick. Each impact briefly pitches the board around the rear axle; the rider holds a constant rearward weight bias so the front truck stays up and the tail rebounds cleanly from step to step until rolling out at the bottom.

Step by step

  1. Approach the stairs straight-on at walking-pace speed.
  2. Lift the front truck into a shallow manual just before the first step edge.
  3. Let the tail clap down on the lip of the first step, keeping weight back.
  4. Ride the rhythm as the tail smacks each successive step, absorbing hits with the knees.
  5. Set the front wheels down at the bottom and roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footRests over the front bolts, holding the nose up at a constant angle.
Back footFirm on the tail, cushioning each impact and keeping the tail engaged with the step lips.
ShouldersSquare, with the torso crouched low to lower the center of mass.
ArmsOut wide, absorbing the staccato pitch changes.
GazeTwo steps ahead, tracking the rhythm of the descent.
