Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.
How it works
The kickturn's harder direction: a pivot on the rear wheels in which the chest and toes open away from the board as the nose swings around frontside, so the shoulders have to lead across the body and the rider loses sight of the board through the middle of the turn. On flat it is the tic-tac's other half; on a transition it is the one that opens you to face the ramp, pivoted partway up the face as the speed runs out rather than at the coping - turning at the coping would be a stall.
Step by step
- Roll at a comfortable speed with the feet over the trucks.
- Weight the tail to unweight the front wheels.
- Turn the shoulders first, opening the chest away from the board, and let the hips and nose follow.
- On a ramp, pivot partway up the face at the top of your speed, short of the coping.
- Set the front wheels down on the new heading, picking the board back up visually.
- Ride away, or drop back down the transition.
Body mechanics
| Front foot | Over the front bolts, guiding the nose around the pivot without pushing it. |
|---|---|
| Back foot | On the tail, feathering pressure to keep the rear wheels planted while the front truck floats. |
| Shoulders | Wind gently frontside going up, then unwind backside to pull the rotation; keep them stacked over the hips. |
| Arms | Trailing arm swings around the body to help the torso rotate; both stay low for balance. |
| Gaze | Look over your leading shoulder down the ramp before the board turns. |
