Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.
How it works
A backside air with a melon grab pushed to maximum tweak: both knees fold back, the board is pulled up behind the body, and the hips push forward so the rider arches like a bow at the peak. The melon grab is the hinge that makes it possible - with the front hand on the heel rail, folding the knees rotates the deck up behind you while the chest drives skyward. The method's difficulty is timing the unfold: the board must swing back under the hips before the wall arrives.
Step by step
- Carve into a backside air with real speed and pop off the coping.
- Grab melon (front hand, heel rail between the feet) immediately as you compress.
- Fold both knees back and pull the board up behind you while pushing your hips forward and chest up.
- Arch through the peak - board behind, body bowed, head up.
- Unfold: knees swing the deck back beneath the hips, release the grab, extend, and re-enter.
Body mechanics
| Front foot | Rises with the folding knee, keeping the sole flush as the board tilts up behind. |
|---|---|
| Back foot | Folds symmetrically, sole turning toward the sky at full tweak. |
| Shoulders | Arch back and up, driving the chest skyward against the tucked board. |
| Arms | Front hand anchors the melon grab; back arm throws high behind the head for the classic silhouette. |
| Gaze | Up and over the leading shoulder at the peak, then down to the transition for the unfold. |
