Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.
How it works
Coming to a stop with the nose of the board in contact with the ground - the tailstop's mirror, and defined in the freestyle glossary alongside it. Rolling forward, the weight goes over the front foot until the nose touches down and the board stops against it, leaving the tail up. It is the position half the freestyle footwork vocabulary is entered from, which is why it is worth having as an entry rather than treating it as a detail of other tricks.
Step by step
- Roll forward slowly with the front foot over the front bolts.
- Shift the weight forward onto that foot until the nose drops.
- Let the nose touch and take the board's momentum against it.
- Balance with the tail raised behind you and the board stopped.
Body mechanics
| Front foot | Presses the nose down and holds it there - the whole stop happens under it. |
|---|---|
| Back foot | Comes off the tail or rides up with it as the board pitches nose-down. |
| Shoulders | Over the front foot, following the weight forward. |
| Arms | Out slightly for the balance once the board is stopped. |
| Gaze | Down at the nose to judge when it will bite. |
