Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.
How it works
The workhorse grab: the back hand takes the toe-side rail between the feet. Named after Independent Trucks, it is the most natural grab in skateboarding because the trailing hand and the toe rail meet almost automatically when the knees compress in an air. Grabbing sucks the board to the feet, kills any flutter, and lets the rider steer the whole rider-board system with the grabbing arm - which is why nearly every rotation trick defaults to indy.
Step by step
- Pop your air off the coping and begin compressing, pulling knees toward your chest.
- Reach your back hand straight down to the toe-side rail between your feet.
- Clamp the rail and pull the board up into your stance, keeping both soles planted on the grip.
- Hold through the peak of the air, using the grab to control the board's attitude.
- Release as you drop toward the coping, extend your legs, and set the wheels on the transition below the lip.
Body mechanics
| Front foot | Over the front bolts, pressing into the grip so the grab has something to pull against. |
|---|---|
| Back foot | On the tail, defining the board's pitch while the hand holds the rail. |
| Shoulders | Stay stacked over the board; the rear shoulder dips naturally with the reach. |
| Arms | Back hand grabs; front arm extends up and out as a counterbalance and style point. |
| Gaze | Over the leading shoulder at the re-entry spot on the transition. |
