Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. How it works

The underside of the nose slides along the ledge's edge, board turned 90 degrees, entered by turning backside so the nose lands on a heel-side ledge while the rider stays open, facing their direction of travel. Support is almost entirely the front leg - the rider stands on the nose with the rest of the board cantilevered off the edge - so the ledge's corner must be waxed for wood-on-concrete to slide. Lean calibration is everything: too much weight over the ledge noses the tail up and over, too little and the nose skips off. The exit turns the tail back under the body to land rolling forward, or stays turned for a fakie roll-away.

Step by step

  1. Approach a waxed ledge on your heel side at a shallow angle with moderate speed.
  2. Ollie and turn 90 degrees backside, pushing the nose down onto the edge.
  3. Land with the nose's underside on the corner, front knee bent deep, tail floating off the edge.
  4. Keep your chest open facing travel, hips over the front foot.
  5. Slide the nose along the edge, feathering pressure to keep it skating rather than sticking.
  6. At the end, turn the tail back under you (or hold fakie), lift off the edge, and roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footOn the nose pocket carrying most of the weight; the slide lives under this foot.
Back footRests on the tail as a rudder, holding the 90-degree angle without weight.
