surface obstacle

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

A frontside 180 over the obstacle that lands in a switch smith position: the rider rotates as if into a frontside lipslide, but instead of the deck, the back truck catches the far edge and grinds with the nose end wedged down against the near face, deck rail on the corner. The board travels tail-truck-first while the rider rides it switch, so the smith wedge is loaded behind the rider's new leading shoulder - an overturned, wrapped-up lock that must be unwound (rotating back or continuing out) to exit. On coping it is a long-standing lip trick done by turning frontside over the coping from below.

Step by step

  1. Approach as for a frontside lipslide, obstacle in front of your toes, with enough speed to carry the whole board over it.
  2. Pop and rotate frontside, carrying the whole board across the obstacle.
  3. At roughly 180, drop the back truck onto the far edge so it hooks and grinds.
  4. Wedge the nose end of the deck down the near face, deck rail seated - a switch smith geometry.
  5. Grind wrapped, weight over the hooked hanger, shoulders coiled.
  6. Exit by unweighting and unwinding the 180 back the way you came (or dropping off the end), landing to roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footBecomes the wedge foot after rotation, pressing the deck's low end down the face.
Back footDrives the frontside pop, then anchors over the grinding truck.
ShouldersRotate hard frontside into the trick and stay coiled; their stored rotation powers the exit unwind.
ArmsWrapped with the rotation, then spread to freeze the overturned balance.
GazeFind the far edge mid-spin and hold it; on exit, look back over the unwinding shoulder to the landing.
