roll yaw pitch body

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

Three rotations the heelflip way - the grip turning toward the toe side - off one flick of the heel. It is harder than the triple kickflip for the same reason a heelflip is harder than a kickflip: the flicking leg extends across the board rather than tucking away from it, so keeping the flicking foot clear of three fast rotations is the whole problem. The board also tends to travel away from the rider, so the pop has to be stacked directly underneath.

Step by step

  1. Place the front foot with the heel well over the toe-side edge, ball of the foot on the deck.
  2. Pop straight and high with the weight stacked over the board, not behind it.
  3. Kick the heel out and down off the nose in one fast snap.
  4. Retract the flicking leg immediately and lift both knees clear of the spinning deck.
  5. Track the grip tape through three passes, keeping the hips centred over the board.
  6. Catch on the third pass with both feet and compress hard on landing.

Body mechanics

Front footSnaps the heel off the nose, then must retract fast - it is the foot most likely to catch the deck.
Back footPops for height and stays high, guiding the board back under the rider.
ShouldersSquare, resisting the natural opening that a heel flick invites.
ArmsUp on the pop, then wide - heelflips drift, and the arms are what corrects it.
GazeOn the deck, counting rotations, with the landing spot in peripheral vision.
