roll yaw pitch body

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

Two half rotations off one ollie: the nose dives and the board pitches 180 degrees forward end-over-end around its short axis, while a half kickflip rolls it 180 degrees around its long axis at the same time. The two halves compose - a half pitch alone would leave the board grip-down, and the half roll is what rights it - so the wheels come back down with the nose and tail traded, the same net result as a shove-it reached by a completely different path. The front foot supplies both impulses in one stroke: a downward punch off the tip of the nose for the pitch, angled toward the heels for the roll, while the legs split fore-aft to let the diving board pass between them.

Step by step

  1. Set the front foot with the toes square across the nose pocket, back foot on the tail.
  2. Pop a compact ollie - the board must be off the ground before either rotation starts.
  3. Drive the front foot down-and-forward off the tip of the nose, angling the punch toward your heels so the board pitches and rolls together.
  4. Let the nose dive between your legs; at the halfway point the deck is on its side, halfway through both turns.
  5. Draw the front leg up and forward as the pitch and the roll finish together.
  6. Catch the board wheels-down - ends now swapped - and land over the bolts.

Body mechanics

Front footPunches down-and-forward off the very tip, angled toward the heel side so one stroke feeds both the forward pitch and the half kickflip roll.
Back footPops the tail, then lifts high and rearward so the tail can wrap over the top.
ShouldersSquare with a forward hinge, following the board's dive.
ArmsForward and low, mirroring the pitch of the trick.
GazeStraight down the board's diving line, picking up the grip tape as it rolls back level.
