roll yaw pitch body

Shown for a regular-footed rider. Teal ring + arrow = the rider's facing direction; teal band = the tail; a dot is where a hand holds the board - bright yellow for the front hand, amber for the back one, which is the whole difference between a mute and an indy. Board and rider rotate independently - each follows its own component. Drag to orbit.

How it works

Popped exactly like a backside 180 heelflip, but the feet leave the board and the rider turns their 180 alone while the deck goes half over and simply waits there. Hovering above a board that is now grip-down, the back foot - the one that popped - flicks down onto it late from above, driving the heelflip back the way it came so the grip comes up again in time to be landed on. The cancel is what makes it possible: a body varial gives you no way to correct a board that is upside down, so instead of completing the flip you undo it. Braille's progression for it runs through backside 360s on flat, then heelflip body varials, then backside 180 heelflip body varials before this. It is also done from fakie as a half-cab, and is known to some as the Ouch Dad Flip.

Step by step

  1. Roll at a comfortable speed and set up as for a backside 180 heelflip.
  2. Pop and kick the heelflip out, turning hips and shoulders backside at the same moment.
  3. Let the feet leave the board and carry the 180 on your own - the deck does not turn with you.
  4. Finish the body varial hovering over a board that is half flipped, grip facing down.
  5. Flick the back foot down onto the deck late, sending the heelflip back the way it came.
  6. Catch the grip as it comes up, stomp the bolts and roll away.

Body mechanics

Front footKicks the heelflip out, then leaves the board entirely for the varial and comes back for the catch.
Back footPops, leaves with the varial, and is the foot that flicks down late to cancel the flip.
ShouldersDrive the whole 180 - they start the varial with the pop and finish it before the flick.
ArmsWrap backside with the shoulders, then open to spot the board underneath.
GazeComes back to the board as the varial finishes; the flick is aimed, not thrown.
